1 Week Pregnant, 39 Weeks to Go!

By this time in your journey, you are not pregnant yet, but could very well be on your period, and the symptoms you are experiencing are likely PMS-related, not pregnancy. Time to get ready for pregnancy: track your cycle, start prenatal vitamins, and make lifestyle changes to prepare your body for what is to come.

Just got a positive pregnancy test? You may want to skip ahead. If you’ve tested around the time of your missed period, you’re likely already four weeks pregnant—hurray!

Medically speaking, being “one week pregnant” usually means that you’re on your period and haven’t yet conceived. Conception typically happens during weeks two or three, depending on your cycle length.

Baby at Week 1

If you’ve just found out you’re expecting, you might think this is your first week of pregnancy, but you’re probably around 4 weeks pregnant. Yes, already! (Your OB will give you a more accurate estimate when you go in for your first prenatal appointment.) Skip ahead and check out week 4.

How big is a baby at 1 week?

Baby is but a glimmer in your eye. Remember, you’re not actually pregnant yet, and if you are, you’re more likely about four or five weeks along.

1 week ultrasound

You will not typically have a 1 week pregnant ultrasound. But if you have been trying for some time to conceive and have been to see a fertility specialist, then you may have undergone an ultrasound to check for such things as fibroids, to estimate how many follicles are in your ovaries and/or to evaluate the thickness of your uterine lining. Your doctor will prescribe the best fertility treatment if there are problems, which will definitely help you conceive. Now, go ahead and get ready to have some sex. You’ve got a baby to make!

Pregnancy Symptoms at Week 1

One week pregnant—remember, this early in the pregnancy, symptoms you are likely to have are similar to those you always have when you are having your period, since you are not actually pregnant yet. Symptoms can begin anywhere from three to seven days and may include:

Vaginal bleeding
Your body is expelling the uterine lining that had fattened up in preparation for a pregnancy.

Lower back pain and cramps
Your uterus is contracting to discharge that lining, and those contractions cause your back and abdomen to ache.

Bloating
Fluctuating hormones can give you that bloated belly right before and during your period.

Mood swings
Those hormone surges can also cause irritability and wreak havoc on your emotions

Headache
Many women complain of menstrual migraines, again related to hormones. Surprise, surprise. Cold or warm compresses, OTC pain relievers, and relaxation exercises may ease the pain.

Your Pregnant Belly at 1 Week

Inside your 1-week belly, remember, you’re not actually pregnant at this point; your body is shedding last month’s uterine lining and commencing to build a new one. This, with a little bit of luck, will be the home of next month’s fertilized egg.

Cool fact: Human eggs are the biggest cells in the body. It’s tiny—smaller than a speck of pepper. Your body will release one, or in rare instances, two eggs at any point between day 10 and day 19 of your menstrual cycle, or about 14 days before your next period is due. That can be fertilized for about 12 to 24 hours after that. And having sex even before then is helpful, since sperm can live in your body for up to five days.

The first signs of pregnancy will not appear immediately; in fact, most women will only find out they are pregnant when they miss their menstrual cycle, which is at week 4 of pregnancy. However, some common early signs of pregnancy in the first weeks following conception include tenderness of the breasts, nausea, general tiredness, and the need to urinate often.

One week pregnant—or more likely, hoping to be pregnant soon!—you’re probably thinking about how you can get your body ready to tote a baby. It’s a good idea to start pregnancy at a healthy weight and sans bad habits such as smoking and drinking. Scale back caffeine to the amount of one cup of coffee or two—we’re talking 8 ounce cups, not the Venti!.

Tips for 1 Week Pregnant

Kick the bad habits
Still smoking, drinking and consuming immoderate amounts of caffeine? You don’t want to reactively halt doing these things after a positive pregnancy test. You should give up bad habits now before you’re expecting.

Consider going for a preconception visit If you haven’t been to your doctor in a while, you might want to schedule a visit even before trying to conceive. It’s an easy way to get the ball rolling and have all your pressing questions addressed and answered.

Try to relax
Pregnancy is a stress factor. Trying to conceive may be a stressful tool, too. Easier said than done, but try not to sweat the small stuff while you get started on this journey.
